Job description 

The Wales team deliver many projects that are important to the local community, as well as supporting on national and international prestigious schemes. We currently have projects in the health, education, transport, commercial, defence, entertainment and water sub-sectors ranging up to £150m in value. Come work with the team who is working on Cardiff Central Station Enhancement, Cardiff Crossrail and ABP’s exciting Port Talbot Transformation plans. 

 

You will be part of the Wales team leadership with line management of a team of structural engineers, responsible for technical leadership and mentoring of the wider structural engineering team and actively involved in technical delivery. You will promote and lead on technical excellence and Mott MacDonald will support your own professional development. The Cardiff structures team is part of a rapidly growing 66 strong Western, Midlands and Wales Team located across Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Colwyn Bay, Exeter and Carmarthenshire.
 
We are looking for someone who will provide a proactive and collaborative approach to clients to ensure the best solution is offered to meet their needs. You will support business development and input into business strategies and planning meetings. You will manage your own client accounts and build strong relationships with our wider client base.

You will have accountability for your own portfolio of projects with commercial and contractual management of projects under your direction.

 

Your day-to-day duties will include:

  • Completion of technical and other project reviews
  • Completion of regular project control meetings and monitoring of commercials
  • Control and planning of resources and contribution to regular team resource meetings
  • Client facing role on projects, including attendance of principal meetings and critical technical design meetings
  • Mentoring of junior members of staff and supporting their development
  • Supervising, checking and approval of project deliverables
  • Preparation of project bids and fee proposals
  • Supporting the senior divisional management team
  • Ensure more senior staff are kept informed of important and relevant service/design decisions

 

Candidate Specification 
The candidate must have extensive experience in design and management of structural engineering buildings projects across a wide variety of sectors and for a range of project sizes and complexities.

 

Ideally you will have the following experience:

  • Relevant degree qualification (BEng BSc, MEng or MSc) in a suitable engineering subject such as Civil or Structural Engineering or equivalent
  • Be a chartered engineer and a member of a relevant professional institution (CEng, MIStructE preferred)
  • Have a broad depth of experience in the delivery of building structures and experience working with other consultants as part of a multi-disciplinary team including architects and MEP engineers
  • Be experienced running projects in a client facing role and managing technical, commercial and contractual matters
  • Experience guiding and coach teams with excellent communication and mentoring skills.
  • Have excellent technical delivery skills, including up to date knowledge of British and European Codes of Practice, BIM, software such as Tekla Structural Designer and Sustainability issues affecting the industry
  • Be able to manage and coordinate resources and contribute to business planning exercises.

 

Desirable criteria the candidate might have:

  • Experience of undertaking building or infrastructure condition, defect or deterioration surveys and inspections and the preparations of reports
  • Have a good understanding of the buildings market in South Wales, a broad range of contacts and proven business development ability.
  • Be able to manage bids and development of new work winning opportunities.
