About the role
We are looking for a Health, Safety and Environment Engineer to support the safe and environmentally responsible delivery of structures and infrastructure activities. You will work collaboratively with project managers, engineers, contractors and client representatives to monitor compliance, identify risks and promote effective health, safety and environmental practices.
Through regular site engagement, inspections, assurance activities and practical technical guidance, you will help ensure that work is delivered in accordance with approved project requirements and applicable health, safety and environmental standards. You will contribute to a positive working culture that encourages shared responsibility, continual improvement and the effective management of risk.
Key responsibilities and duties are listed, but not limited to, the below:
- Support the implementation and continual improvement of project health, safety and environmental requirements.
- Monitor site activities against approved HSE plans, procedures, risk assessments and method statements.
- Conduct site inspections, audits and assurance activities, documenting findings and monitoring actions through to closure.
- Review contractor HSE plans, risk assessments, method statements and associated supporting documentation.
- Identify hazards, unsafe conditions and environmental risks, recommending practical and proportionate control measures.
- Provide HSE guidance to project managers, engineers, supervisors and contractors.
- Support the reporting and investigation of incidents, near misses and environmental events.
- Contribute to inductions, toolbox talks, safety briefings and HSE awareness activities.
- Maintain accurate inspection reports, registers, records and HSE performance information.
- Promote good environmental practice, including pollution prevention, responsible waste management and efficient resource use.
- Support continuous improvement and digital ways of working, sharing knowledge and lessons learned.
- Demonstrate safe, ethical and inclusive behaviours aligned to Mott MacDonald values.
Candidate specification
Essential
- A degree, diploma or recognised qualification in occupational health and safety, environmental management, engineering or a related discipline.
- Relevant HSE experience within construction, engineering, infrastructure or a comparable project environment.
- Experience conducting site inspections, audits or HSE assurance activities.
- Experience reviewing risk assessments, method statements and contractor HSE documentation.
- Knowledge of occupational health, safety and environmental requirements relevant to project delivery.
- An understanding of incident and near-miss reporting and investigation.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the confidence to raise concerns constructively.
- The ability to work collaboratively with clients, contractors and multidisciplinary project teams.
Desirable
- Experience supporting major infrastructure, transportation or structures projects.
- A recognised health and safety qualification, such as NEBOSH, IOSH or an equivalent certification.
- Knowledge of ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 management systems.
- Membership of a relevant health, safety or environmental professional body.
- Experience with digital HSE inspection, assurance or reporting tools.
