The Surveyor II position plays a key role in data acquisition. A Survey Instrument Operator assists a survey crew in conducting various types of land surveys including boundary, topographic, ALTA/NSPS, construction layout, and as-built surveys. The role involves operating and maintaining precision surveying instruments and ensuring accurate data collection in the field. It is imperative that the instrument operator pays great attention to detail and is meticulous with how equipment is set up, operated, and cared for.  

 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Operate and maintain all technical surveying instruments and measuring devices needed to complete different types of survey assignments for projects
  • Place marks, stakes, pins, and monuments
  • Drive stakes to fix survey points and determine location data to be placed on stakes
  • Measure distances using survey tape and be able to accurately read
  • Obtain data pertaining to angles, distances, elevations, and descriptions and attribute various surveying instruments
  • Verify levels, alignment, and elevation of items to be constructed
  • Perform routine analysis to check applicability, accuracy, and reasonableness of data
  • Keep accurate notes, records, and sketches to describe work performed and submit daily
  • Participate in basic layout and field engineering activities
  • Perform maintenance of field equipment and maintain supplies for survey crew
  • Work with the Party Chief to meet the goals of the project in a safe and efficient manner

 

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 1 year of surveying experience.  Previous Mott MacDonald experience preferred
  • Familiarity with commonly used surveying terms and with the use and care of survey tools and other survey field equipment used for measuring, sighting, and leveling
  • Ability in the operation of survey equipment such as the Total Station, Data Collector, level, and various Global Positioning Systems (GPS)
  • Ability to read and understand alignment sheets and construction plans
  • Ability to walk and climb over rough terrain and withstand working outside for up to 8-12 hours a day and 6 to 7 days per week in varying temperatures
  • Must be willing to travel for extended periods of time
  • Must possess manual dexterity with the physical ability to work in situations which require bending, kneeling, squatting, reaching, and lifting/carrying items up to fifty (50) pounds
  • Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (Protective eyewear, gloves, mask) and other safety equipment required by the company guidelines and procedures
  • The ideal candidate will possess the following:
    • Previous pipeline surveying experience
    • Strong work ethic and team-player attitude
    • A valid driver license
