The Energy unit delivers services to clients globally across several sectors including hydropower, nuclear, waste, renewable generation and transmission & distribution networks. Together we provide integrated engineering and project management services across the project lifecycle – from concept and design to construction and operations, to decommissioning or repowering and life extension. Together with our clients, we’re helping to deliver the energy transition globally. 

 

About the role  


We are looking for an experienced health and safety professional to provide leadership and support in managing health, safety, and wellbeing across the business unit.  

The Unit Safety Manager will also contribute to our growing portfolio of projects across Europe, ensuring that both UK and wider European health and safety standards are effectively applied.  

The role will require flexibility and a willingness to travel within the UK and internationally to support business needs and project delivery. 
 
 
Key responsibilities and duties include: 

  • Improve the unit’s health, safety, and wellbeing performance and promote the use of the Mott MacDonald Business Management System to support this improvement. 

  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement by engaging and influencing unit management. 

  • Deliver health and safety training and provide advice, guidance, and support to project teams and staff. 

  • Report on health and safety performance, including trend analysis and lessons learned, and contribute to management and board reports. 

  • Support the planning and review of high risk activities and undertake site visits to improve oversight of work activities. 

  • Manage incident reporting and contribute to internal investigations, ensuring lessons are captured and communicated. 

  • Maintain oversight of the unit’s risk profile and provide support to Project Safety Advisers. 

  • Work with senior management, HR, and the regional wellbeing manager to integrate health, safety, and wellbeing requirements into policies and practices. 

  • Represent the unit externally as required, including liaison with enforcement authorities and other relevant bodies. 

  • Own the Unit Health and Safety Plan, setting and monitoring objectives, and providing updates to the Unit Executive. 

  • Promote effective communication and dissemination of health, safety, security, and wellbeing information across the unit. 

  • Carry out the annual health and safety management review at unit level and participate in relevant internal and external meetings. 

  • Keep abreast of developments in legislation and best practice, ensuring compliance and appropriate action. 

  • Set a strong personal example and promote a positive intervention culture. 

  • Be willing and able to travel both within the UK and internationally, as required, to support projects and business needs. 
     
     
    Candidate Specification 
     
    Essential 

  • Experienced health and safety professional with a proven record of developing a positive safety culture. 

  • Confident communicator, able to stay calm under pressure and deliver clear, reasoned recommendations. 

  • Ability to build effective working relationships with managers, employees, and stakeholders. 

  • Team player who embodies company values and culture and focuses on the success of the business and function. 

  • Health and safety related degree or equivalent qualification from an appropriate body. 

  • Solid understanding of health and safety legislation and its application in complex environments, with strong knowledge of UK standards and a working awareness of wider European health and safety legislation and practice. 

  • Working knowledge of health and safety management systems and the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (CDM), particularly from a designer’s perspective. 

  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally as part of the role. 
     
    Desirable 

  • Previous experience in an engineering consultancy and/or contracting environment. 

  • NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent, holding or working towards CMIOSH. 

  • Ability to influence management in identifying and managing risk. 

  • Calm and confident decision-maker with strong prioritisation and time management skills. 

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written. 

  • Ability to engage and influence at all levels, including external stakeholders. 

  • Experience conducting site visits and inspections. 

  • Awareness of European health and safety standards, directives, and best practice frameworks is desirable.
