This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a unit health and safety team, with responsibility for leading the IDS community in identifying improvements in health and safety across the business. We are looking for a motivated, proactive individual, focussed on adding value to the business, through effective engagement with staff and project managers. The role is essential to our business in assessing not only compliance with our system and external standards but also identifying how we can improve what we do. It is an opportunity to make a difference to how we work on our projects and how we interact with our customers.
 

  • Reporting to the Unit HSSW Manager, this is a full time role to cover the following key duties:
  • Promote the use of our common processes to improve performance and support collaboration through the Group
  • Support and Promote the routine use of Step to release added value to the business
  • Promoting a culture of continuous improvement in the management of the Unit - proactively engage with and mentor project HSW focal points
  • Assist with project WIN bids and DO implementation stages
  • Providing or arranging health and safety training for staff in the Region
  • Reporting to the Unit GM on health and safety performance, including analysis of trends and issues arising from audits and the dissemination of lessons learned as appropriate
  • Support portfolios in closing out non-conformities and escalating issues where necessary
  • To contribute to or undertake internal investigations when required
  • To keep abreast of developments in relevant legislation and practice, and act upon any changes accordingly
  • To represent the Unit externally, where required, including liaising with the enforcement authorities and other bodies as necessary
  • To work with the Unit HR team, as required, to ensure employment policies and other HR issues incorporate required health and safety requirements
  • Promote and improve incident reporting and positive interventions across the unit 
  • Co-ordinate health and safety issues with the Unit’s Business Management Systems Manager.
  • Ensure appropriate dissemination of health and safety information within the Unit.
  • Represent the Unit on health and safety matters, at relevant meetings as directed by the Unit Health & Safety Lead.
  • Audit and inspect offices and sites within the Unit
  • Review and update the Unit Well-Being Plan with Unit Health & Safety Lead on regular basis.
  • Monitor Unit health and safety objectives.
  • Audit and inspect offices and sites within the Unit.

LEARN:

  • Undertake suitable continuous professional development to ensure the understanding of the latest legislation, guidance and advice to perform the role remains current.

Reporting to the Unit HSW manager you will be responsible for: 
 

  • Promoting an active safety culture across the Unit.
  • Provide health and safety advice for staff and managers in the Unit.
  • Promote effective communication and dissemination of relevant health and safety information within the Unit.
  • Review and update the Unit Well-Being Plan with Unit Health & Safety Lead on regular basis.
  • Monitor Unit health and safety objectives.
  • Audit and inspect offices and sites within the Unit.
  • Undertake safety training when required.
  • Undertake accident investigations when required.
  • Keep abreast of developments in health and safety legislation and practice, and act upon any changes across the business locations accordingly
  • Liaise with the enforcement authorities and other bodies as necessary.
  • Prepare monthly health and safety reports for the Unit HSW Manager, incorporating appropriate contribution from each Division.
  • Liaise with the Unit, Regional and Group Safety Manager as required.
  • Co-ordinate health and safety issues with the Unit’s Business Management Systems Manager.
  • Ensure appropriate dissemination of health and safety information within the Unit.
  • Represent the Unit on health and safety matters, at relevant meetings as directed by the Unit Health & Safety Manager
  • Set a personal example.
  • willing to travel to international countries some of which have a high or extreme travel risk rating at short notice.
  • Support the unit with Travel reviews.

 

Candidates must hold a NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent and Graduate Membership of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (Grad IOSH or above). With operational experience and a working interest and at best actual experience in international development, you will have a solid appreciation and understanding of health and safety legislation and its application in challenging contexts.

You will be able to demonstrate an excellent working knowledge of Microsoft packages and proven experience of working with databases, reports and data analysis. 

You will be required to engage, develop and maintain effective working relationships with managers, employees and stakeholders and should therefore possess excellent communication skills and effective planning and time management skills. A working knowledge of health and safety management systems is also essential.
The candidate must be willing to travel internationally for up to 2 weeks at a time where required to locations that may have a high or extreme risk travel rating
