Mott MacDonald is currently seeking a Surveyor for transportation, civil infrastructure, and other surveying projects based in our Charleston West Virginia office, but may support other regional offices as needed. The Surveyor position is intended for an early-career survey professional with approximately 1–3 years of surveying or related field experience. This role supports field survey crews in the collection of accurate survey data for boundary, topographic, ALTA/NSPS, construction layout, as-built, utility, infrastructure, and pipeline-related survey assignments. The position is a development track for individuals seeking progressive field experience toward professional survey licensure.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Assist survey crews with data collection for boundary, topographic, ALTA/NSPS, construction layout, as-built, utility, infrastructure, and pipeline-related survey assignments
- Operate and maintain survey instruments and measuring devices, including Total Station, Data Collector, GPS/GNSS equipment, levels, tapes, and related field tools
- Perform routine checks for applicability, accuracy, and reasonableness of collected field data
- Keep accurate field notes, records, sketches, daily logs, and supporting documentation describing work performed
- Participate in basic construction layout, field engineering support, and survey control activities under appropriate supervision
- Assist with downloading, transferring, organizing, and submitting field data in digital format when trained and authorized
- Assist with records research in support of various engineering and survey projects
- Maintain field equipment, supplies, batteries, and accessories needed for efficient survey crew operations
- Work with the Party Chief, Survey Crew Lead, or licensed survey professional to meet project goals safely, accurately, and efficiently
- Assist with acquisition of right of way and right of entry agreements for various engineering and surveying projects
- Adhere to safety requirements, including PPE use, incident reporting, safe work practices, and company procedures
Candidate Specifications:
- At least 1–3 years of land surveying, construction surveying, utility surveying, pipeline surveying, civil infrastructure field work, or related technical field experience
- Familiarity with commonly used surveying terms and with the use and care of survey tools and survey field equipment. Ability to operate or assist with the operation of survey equipment. Ability to read and understand basic construction plans, alignment sheets, plats, sketches, and field documentation
- Ability to maintain accurate notes, records, sketches, and daily documentation
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate field data collection
- Ability to walk and climb over rough terrain and withstand working outdoors for long durations in varying temperatures
- Must possess manual dexterity and the physical ability to work in situations requiring bending, kneeling, squatting, reaching, and lifting or carrying items up to fifty (50) pounds
- Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including safety toe shoes, class 3 safety vest, protective eyewear, gloves, masks, and other safety equipment as required by company guidelines and procedures
- Must be willing to travel as needed
- Holds a valid driver’s license
- Preferred Qualifications
- Surveyor Intern, or equivalent certification, where available in the applicable jurisdiction
- Previous pipeline, utility, transportation, civil infrastructure, construction layout, or as-built survey experience
- Experience with survey data collector software and basic digital field data workflows
- Familiarity with ALTA/NSPS, boundary, topographic, construction layout, and as-built survey assignments
- Interest in pursuing professional licensure as a Professional Surveyor
- Strong work ethic, team-player attitude, technical curiosity, and willingness to learn from experienced survey professionals
- Strong documentation, communication, and organizational skills
- Notary Public registration
