About the business unit 
We help conceive, drive, and implement transport solutions for cities, regions, and asset owners/operators around the globe. From preparing the business case and advising on related issues - such as revenue, procurement, and environmental legislation - to delivering the completed infrastructure and helping maintain it. Our planning, engineering, environmental and management skills cover the whole project cycle. We play a major role in developing and delivering the Global Transport Sector Strategy. 

 

 

Overview of the role

We are seeking a Highways Engineer, working towards professional qualification, to join our Transport and Mobility Solutions Division in our Colwyn Bay office. The role involves developing transport-sector design solutions, from concepts and feasibility plans through to planning application and construction details, using the latest digital delivery methods. 

 

Our work focuses on creating innovative, safe, and efficient solutions that deliver strong social value for our clients.

 

As a Highways Engineer, you will collaborate with colleagues across the UK and internationally. This varied and rewarding role offers excellent opportunities for career development within Mott MacDonald.

 

Key elements of the role are:

  • Technical excellence
    • Work on major projects for the Welsh Government, other government agencies, local authorities, and contractors
    • Analyse data, develop innovative engineering solutions, and ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards
    • Produce engineering drawings using AutoCAD and promote adherence to Mott MacDonald’s CAD Standards and management systems
    • Undertake 3D modelling using Civil3D or OpenRoads, and deliver models via Navisworks or similar platforms
    • Operate within Common Data Environments, contribute to BIM Execution Plans, and ensure model compliance
    • Support the management of projects or project components in line with quality procedures, budgets, and programme requirements when required
    • Deliver assigned work to a high standard, minimising rework 
  • Client satisfaction
    • Work with a range of public and private clients, from local authorities to multinational organisations
    • Support internal clients across multiple Mott MacDonald business units
    • Contribute to projects of local and national importance
  • Team working and collaboration
    • Assist project and team managers in maintaining a strong delivery culture
    • Manage elements of projects through various phases when required
    • Demonstrate a proactive approach to technical challenges and project issues
    • Contribute to Health & Safety initiatives within the team and wider business
    • Report issues promptly to the Team Manager
    • Delegate tasks to team members as appropriate 

 

 

Candidate specification

Essential:

  • Degree‑qualified in Civil Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent experience
  • Working towards Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status
  • Technically astute, with some experience mentoring apprentices or graduates
  • Demonstrable experience working on multi‑discipline design projects, with strong knowledge of highway design standards (Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB), Specification for Highways Works (SHW), Manual for Streets) and sound engineering principles
  • Proficiency in design tools such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, OpenRoads, and InfoDrainage
  • Confident verbal and written communicator

 

Required skills:

  • Strong problem‑solving ability
  • Understanding of highway design principles
  • Knowledge of BIM for coordinating design inputs
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work independently when needed
  • Awareness of personal Health & Safety responsibilities
  • Willingness to travel or work away from home when required
