About the business unit

As the Heavy Civil Infrastructure Division within the Transport Unit, we primarily focus on major civil infrastructure projects in the transport market as well as in the energy and the water markets. We have a clear ambition to be a leading provider of heavy civil engineering design services and the preferred design partner for contractors on major civil infrastructure D&B projects across the UK.

 

Job description:

We have an exciting opportunity in our Bridge and Civil Structures team where we are looking for a Principal Account Lead.

Bridge and Civil Structures: At Mott MacDonald we have provided consultancy services at the forefront of bridge technology for more than half a century. Recent projects include the River Irwell Bridge (UK’s first rail network arch bridge), Doha Orbital Highway, Hammersmith Suspension Bridge Refurbishment, and Lender’s Technical Advisor for the Canakkale Bridge in Turkey, the world’s longest suspension bridge. We’re also delivering bridge designs for high-speed rail infrastructure projects such as HS2 Phase 1 Main Works North & Phase 2b hybrid Bill. This experience is built on our heritage of designing iconic bridges such as George Street Bridge, the UK’s first modern cable stay bridge, Tsing Ma Suspension Bridge and the Forth Road Bridge, the forerunner of major span suspension bridges. 

We have just over 200 bridge Engineers working as an integrated team based in our UK (across 12 offices in different UK regions) and Madrid offices, delivering exciting projects both in the UK and internationally. We are an integral part of Mott MacDonald’s wider Bridges and Civil Structures practice of over 750 engineers and technicians, focussing on delivering technical excellence with great social outcomes for our clients through utilising the latest digital design tools. 

 

 

Your Role:

As manager of the Bridge and Civil Structures Business, you will be responsible for its leadership and operational management, in line with KPIs and Divisional, Unit and Group Plans and establishing and developing long term relationships with internal and external customers. You will also be accountable for the successful delivery of projects including the appropriate deployment of resources from within a team of over 200 people. This role is pivotal in creating and embedding a strategy that enables and delivers a collaborative culture and engaged staff across the team (across offices and countries).

 

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Developing and delivering the Bridge and Civil Structures business strategy in accordance with Unit and Divisional business plans and managing the relevant Account Leads.
  • Accountability for ensuring that appropriate commercial measures are developed in line with business plans including forecasts, budgets and Group Operating Directives.
  • Accountability for leading and managing Bridge and Civil Structures business development opportunities in line with the business plan and strategy.
  • Accountability for successful project delivery from both a commercial, programme and technical perspective, with quality outcomes for our clients.
  • Accountability for planning and managing the Bridge and Civil Structures resources to optimise service delivery performance whilst creating space for effective staff development.
  • Accountability for developing and maintaining good client relations.
  • Provide technical leadership to enable successful project delivery.
  • Accountability for the health, safety and wellbeing of the team and ensure that the Bridge and Civil Structures business adheres to the Group’s Health, Safety and Wellbeing policies and guidelines.
  • Addressing client’s issues and fulfilling their aspirations on sustainability and social outcomes.

 

Candidate Specification:

Essential:

  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in technology or science or business or other field related to the sectors that Mott MacDonald operate in.
  • Chartered, or membership of equivalent professional institution such as ICE, IET, APM etc.
  • As a company that believes in continuous improvement and progress, we are looking for a visionary leader to further enhance our service offering through innovation, advance our technical excellence and drive forward digital tools.
  • As the team is based across many UK offices and our Madrid office in Spain, regular travel and engagement with teams across different offices will be required.  
  • Ability to delegate, develop and empower others.
  • Excellent communication skills and able to relate to others at all levels. Ability to build and maintain internal cross unit relationships and support networks.
  • Good customer service focus, and client and stakeholder relationship building skills.

The candidate is expected to be able to demonstrate the following experience:

  • Previous successful team leadership, commercial management experience and project delivery experience
  • A good understanding and appreciation of civil structure technical disciplines
  • Demonstrable track record of successful business development and achievement of targets

Desirable:

  • Experience delivering bridge and civil infrastructure engineering consultancy design
  • Experience working in the design and build environment
