About the business unit
The Energy unit delivers services to clients globally across a number of sectors including hydropower, nuclear, waste, renewable generation and transmission & distribution networks in Ireland. Together we provide integrated engineering and project management services across the project lifecycle – from concept and design, to construction and operations, to decommissioning or repowering and life extension. Together with our clients, we’re helping to deliver the energy transition globally.
About the role:
Mott MacDonald has an exciting opportunity for a Principal Electrical Engineer (HV Cable Design) to join our expanding Power Transmission and Distribution team . The successful candidate will be motivated to work on a range of diverse industry leading projects developing innovative solutions for power transmission grid systems and for client transmission and distribution installations ensuring security of electricity supply, developing the integration of renewable energy sources and bringing large power infrastructural plans from concept to delivery stage. This role offers the opportunity to work with a range of clients/stakeholders including major utilities and large global demand customers in a rapidly changing energy sector.
What You’ll Be Doing – Key Responsibilities
As a Principal Electrical Engineer, your role will be diverse and impactful:
- HVAC/HVDC Cable System Design: Dive into all aspects of transmission cable system design, from conceptualization to implementation for Onshore and Offshore projects.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration of HV cables into substations, converter stations, and grid networks.
- Conduct feasibility studies, risk assessments, and cost analyses for transmission cable system projects.
- Front End Engineering Design (FEED): Be the visionary. Deliver innovative solutions for cable systems integration into major infrastructural development projects.
- Consenting Stage Cable System design. Leading the interface with our civil and environmental teams to plan the delivery of transmission cable systems in line with consenting requirements.
- Tender Stage Design/Detail Design for Transmission cable systems, developing concept stage design through to construction detail level.
- Troubleshoot and resolve transmission cable-related issues during installation and operation/maintenance phases.
- Stay abreast of technological advancements in HV cable materials, insulation, and transmission technologies.
Candidate Specification:
Essential:
- Degree in Electrical Engineering
- Experienced transmission cable systems engineer
- Strong analytical skills and able to solve complex engineering problems relating to transmission power cable systems
- A willingness to engage with new challenges as well as an ability to work confidently on tasks for which you have prior experience.
- Ability to demonstrate good written communication skills including report writing.
Excellent communication and people skills.
Desirable:
- Experience in design of both onshore and offshore transmission cable systems
- Experience in design of HV cable transmission systems for UK and Ireland utilities
- Experience in design of HVAC and HVDC transmission cable systems
- Masters in Electrical Engineering
Beneficial :
- Experience in Offshore substation design ( conceptual phase)
- Irish project experience
