About the business unit
The Buildings and Cities Unit (BNC) has a major presence in Mott MacDonald's regional offices throughout the UK and mainland Europe, providing a wide range of diverse and transferable cross-sector skills across five key Sectors; Advisory, Built Environment, Energy, Transportation and Water. We also provide local services to customers and technical leadership to the rest of the Group in these sectors.
Overview of role:
We are looking for a talented and highly motivated chartered structural engineer with considerable defence sector experience, to lead designs and join a growing team working on government and defence sector projects.
In this role you will:
- Take a hands-on approach, lead other structural engineers and technicians within the defence sector, to deliver projects or large work packages within major programmes of work
- Liaise with clients and external consultants to understand, develop and deliver the brief. Report to clients and/or contractors on progress
- Collaborate with architects, building services engineers and other disciplines, either in a lead or contributory role
- Produce designs at all stages from Concept to Construction, leading technical delivery to produce reports, calculations, drawings and presentations as needed
- Liaise with contractors to ensure the best form of buildable designs for site and to embed safety requirements into the designs.
- Assess carbon emissions to provide information to clients and support internal carbon reduction programmes
- Help to develop and mentor junior structural engineers
- Contribute to preparing bids and developing new business in the defence sector
- Assist with negotiating and applying consultancy contracts, including terms and conditions and scope of service
- Take responsibility for internal project management including budgeting, planning and programmes and monitoring progress
For this role you will need:
- Significant experience of managing and delivering structural designs in the defence sector or for the Home Office is essential for this role
- Security Clearance or be eligible to apply
- Chartered Engineer status as a member of a relevant institution (IStructE, ICE or equivalent)
- Experience of managing and delivering designs for a contractor in the Defence sector
- Experience with software packages commonly used in structural design such as Robot, Tekla Structural Designer, and TEDDS.
- Strong organisational, collaboration and communication skills
