About the business unit  
The Energy unit delivers services to clients globally across several sectors including hydropower, nuclear, waste, renewable generation and transmission & distribution networks. Together we provide integrated engineering and project management services across the project lifecycle – from concept and design to construction and operations, to decommissioning or repowering and life extension. Together with our clients, we’re helping to deliver the energy transition globally. 

 

 

Overview of the role

We are seeking a Technical Director to lead MV/HV electrical design within our Transmission & Distribution portfolio. You will provide technical leadership across projects for major energy users, renewable connections, and networks (11kV–33kV+), while also supporting M&E delivery.

 

You will lead delivery across the full project lifecycle—from feasibility and FEED through design, construction, commissioning, and completion—ensuring high standards of quality, safety, and client service.

 

Key responsibilities and duties include:

  • Lead electrical design and provide technical solutions for complex infrastructure projects, ensuring delivery to time, budget, and regulatory standards
  • Oversee feasibility, optioneering, and detailed design of MV/HV systems including substations, cables, protection systems, and associated infrastructure
  • Provide technical assurance by reviewing and approving design deliverables and ensuring compliance with relevant standards
  • Support construction and commissioning, resolving technical issues and managing commercial impacts
  • Lead multidisciplinary teams, coordinate interfaces, and ensure integrated design delivery
  • Contribute to bids, proposals, and resource planning
  • Act as a key client interface and maintain strong stakeholder relationships
  • Ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and industry standards while incorporating innovation
  • Mentor and develop junior engineers and support team growth

 

 

Candidate specification

Technical expertise:

  • Strong knowledge of electrical engineering and substation design for transmission and distribution
  • Experience delivering MV/HV designs (substations, cables, networks, protection/control systems)
  • Experience delivering M&E designs
  • Understanding of industry standards, DNO/client requirements, and regulatory frameworks
  • Experience in technical quality assurance processes

 

Project leadership:

  • Proven experience leading electrical teams across full project lifecycle stages
  • Ability to manage scope, cost, programme, and technical quality
  • Experience in team development, multidisciplinary coordination, and bid support

 

Design & coordination:

  • Strong collaboration across civil, environmental, and multidisciplinary teams
  • Ability to deliver integrated design solutions

 

Additional skills:

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to resolve technical issues across all stages
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills with ability to influence stakeholders
  • Self-motivated with ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Proficiency in MS Office and flexibility to travel as required

 

Experience & qualifications:

  • Significant experience in transmission and distribution design, ideally across major infrastructure projects
  • Experience in renewables, grid connections, substations and network design advantageous
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering (or related and Chartered status (or working towards)
