About the business unit  
The Energy unit delivers services to clients globally across several sectors including hydropower, nuclear, waste, renewable generation and transmission & distribution networks. Together we provide integrated engineering and project management services across the project lifecycle – from concept and design to construction and operations, to decommissioning or repowering and life extension. Together with our clients, we’re helping to deliver the energy transition globally.

 

 

Overview of the role

The Electrical Designer is responsible for supporting the preparation of electrical drawings, layouts, and documentation for medium voltage substation projects. Working under the guidance of senior engineers and designers, the role contributes to the delivery of accurate and high-quality design outputs.

 

Key responsibilities and duties include:

  • Drafting and Design
    • Prepare electrical drawings for substation secondary systems, including protection, control, and communication systems
    • Produce wiring diagrams, cable schedules, block diagrams, and equipment layouts
    • Assist with cable routing, trench layouts, and equipment arrangement drawings
    • Update and revise drawings in accordance with project requirements and engineering comments
  • Technical Support
    • Support the preparation of technical documentation for secondary systems
    • Assist in ensuring designs comply with relevant standards, client requirements, and company procedures
    • Contribute to design coordination activities with multidisciplinary teams
  • Project Delivery
    • Maintain drawing registers and revision records
    • Support project teams in meeting programme and quality requirements
    • Participate in design reviews and incorporate feedback into design deliverables
  • Quality
    • Follow established drafting and quality control procedures
    • Support continuous improvement initiatives within the design team

 

 

Candidate specification

Essential:

  • HNC/HND, Diploma, Associate Degree or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Design, or a related discipline
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and/or other relevant design software
  • Basic understanding of electrical engineering principles and substation secondary systems
  • Good attention to detail and ability to work accurately
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Ability to work under supervision whilst managing assigned tasks effectively

 

Desirable:

  • Experience producing electrical design drawings for utility, industrial, or infrastructure projects
  • Familiarity with protection and control systems
  • Some experience using Navisworks, Revit, MicroStation, or similar design tools
  • Some experience on UK transmission or distribution projects
  • Awareness of National Grid, SSE, SPEN, or DNO standards
