About the business unit
The Buildings Unit (BLD) has a major presence in Mott MacDonald's regional offices throughout the UK and mainland Europe, providing a wide range of diverse and transferable cross-sector skills across five key Sectors; Advisory, Built Environment, Energy, Transportation and Water. We also provide local services to customers and technical leadership to the rest of the Group in these sectors.
Overview of the role
Holding a position on the Divisional Senior Leadership Team, this senior level role is responsible for the commercial management of the newly created Defence Division of circa 230 people in multiple locations within the Buildings Business Unit, and will work under the direction of the Divisional General Manager, to lead and direct the commercial performance of the Division. Defence is a growth market for Mott MacDonald both in the UK, and more widely in Australia and North America. In the UK buildings market, working as the lead designer for D&B contractors is a focus area for the business that will deliver significant growth over the next 5 years. This role is pivotal to the success of the Defence Division and requires the successful candidate to have tangible experience of working in this environment.
Key responsibilities and duties include:
- Ensure compliance with Mott MacDonald commercial systems and procedures
- Govern and manage liability risks and special commitments
- Advise on commercial strategies and approvals, especially in the Defence market
- Support commercial strategies for key projects and project risks
- Improve Capital Employed
- Embed code of ethics, values, and ethical behaviour throughout the Division and support the Group Ethics Manager in embedding the code of business ethics and act as a role model
- Train, develop, track, and review commercial capability and support
- Develop risk management strategies for specific areas of risk in target markets/key prospects
- Be accountable for overall commercial performance and capital employed in the Division
You will be expected to act as an ambassador and voice for Mott MacDonald within the geography and sectors you operate, articulating and representing the brand, vision and value proposition, and be responsible for managing several complex relationships and priorities. You will drive inclusivity and exhibit our Code and PRIDE values.
Candidate specification
Essential:
- Proven experience in delivering commercial success in the buildings or defence sector with strong emphasis on Design & Build (D&B)
- Knowledge and experience in the use of typical contract terms including NEC suite of contracts
- Ability to define and drive commercial strategy
- Appreciation of commercial risks and mitigations
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and strong business ethics
- Knowledge and experience of effective commercial and project controls and commercial management best practice
Desirable:
- Knowledge and understanding of liability and governance risks and controls
- Contract negotiation and claims
- Knowledge and experience of commercial risks and opportunities specific to buildings, defence and D&B
- Good interpersonal skills, team oriented with the ability to work closely with peers, ability to delegate, motivate and empower individuals and teams
- Registered or accredited professional and membership of a relevant professional institution
