Build on your experience while helping shape what comes next. At Mott MacDonald, you'll work alongside talented people on complex and rewarding projects that make a real difference. Whether you're deepening your technical expertise, broadening your leadership experience, or exploring new opportunities across our business, you'll be supported by a team that is committed to helping you succeed.

Mott MacDonald is seeking an experienced Civil Group Leader to lead, grow and develop our civil engineering capability in Los Angeles and across California and the rest of the Southwest Region.

This is a senior technical, people, and business leadership position for someone who wants to combine major project delivery with client development and team building. The Group Leader will provide leadership for civil engineering delivery and project management for design projects across all of our markets while strengthening relationships with key clients, supporting pursuits and creating new opportunities for the wider business.

A key part of the opportunity will be to develop and grow the team. Working closely with our market, portfolio and project leadership teams, you will identify the capabilities we need, to attract, recruit and develop a high-performing civil team that can support projects across transportation, water, buildings, energy and other infrastructure sectors.

The successful candidate will be a recognized hands-on civil engineering leader with strong local and regional market knowledge, an established client network and the ability to move comfortably between leading people, overseeing design delivery, engaging clients and developing new business.

Your Impact

  • Lead and grow the Civil Group, primarily in California, creating a strong team structure and hiring the talent and capabilities required to support future growth.

  • Provide senior technical and design leadership on major civil and infrastructure projects, ensuring high standards of quality, constructability and delivery.

  • Act as Project Manager, Design Manager or Civil Task Leader for design projects across markets

  • Play an active role in business development and sales, building relationships with existing and prospective clients, and identifying opportunities for Mott MacDonald.

  • Work alongside Division General Manager, Area Development Manager, Client Directors, Market Leaders, Discipline Leaders and project teams to develop capture strategies, support major pursuits, participate in client interviews and help convert opportunities into work.

  • Build a strong understanding of the Los Angeles and Southern California market, helping determine where we should invest, which clients we should prioritize and where our civil capabilities can differentiate us.

  • Position the Civil Group with a cross-sector high-quality delivery capability, deploying expertise across transportation, water, buildings, energy and other major infrastructure programs rather than operating within a single market.

  • Provide senior oversight and guidance across civil design, multidisciplinary coordination, design reviews, constructability, technical risk, QA/QC and project delivery.

  • Develop a forward-looking view of project pipeline, workload and resource demand, ensuring the group has the capacity and skills required to deliver upcoming work.

  • Recruit, mentor, train and develop engineers and future technical leaders, creating clear development and succession opportunities within the group.

  • Work collaboratively with other Groups, Divisions and offices to deploy resources effectively and bring the best of Mott MacDonald to our clients.

  • Support commercial and operational performance through effective resource planning, utilization, project performance, and sustainable growth.

  • Champion a culture of safety, technical excellence, collaboration, accountability and innovation.

Your Leadership in Action

You will be expected to operate as a player-coach, remaining close enough to projects and clients to provide credible technical leadership while also creating the space to grow the business and develop the team.

You will:

  • Be a visible senior civil design leader on strategically important projects and pursuits.

  • Build trusted relationships with clients, partners and the wider Southern California infrastructure community.

  • Identify where Mott MacDonald can expand existing relationships or introduce civil capability into opportunities originating elsewhere in the business.

  • Develop people around you rather than becoming the technical bottleneck for the group.

  • Recruit strategically against future market demand.

  • Bring different disciplines and sectors together to create integrated solutions for clients.

  • Balance project delivery, people leadership and business development, recognizing that long-term success requires all three.

What You'll Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline.

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in California

  • Significant experience in civil engineering, design and delivery of major infrastructure projects particularly in the transportation market

  • Strong experience leading civil engineering teams and multidisciplinary project delivery.

  • Demonstrated ability to provide senior technical oversight across complex civil design projects.

  • Strong technical knowledge in roadway, drainage, utilities, construction staging, pavement, hydrology, hydraulics, water quality and other similar civil design components

  • Strong understanding of the latest versions of software such as AutoCAD, Civil3D, InRoads, ArcGIS, ProjectWise, Microstation, Revit and other similar design and document control software

  • Proven experience developing client relationships, pursuits, proposals and new business opportunities.

  • Strong knowledge of the Southern California engineering and infrastructure market and the broader regional industry landscape

  • An established network of established partners with relevant owners, agencies, consultants, contractors, and industry partners is highly desirable.

  • Experience recruiting, developing, and retaining high-performing engineering teams.

  • Ability to work across multiple markets and position civil capability within wider multidisciplinary programs.

  • Strong understanding of design management, constructability, technical assurance, risk, quality and commercial project delivery.

  • Experience with alternative delivery models such as design-build and progressive design-build would be beneficial.

  • Strong communication, leadership and relationship-management skills, with the credibility to engage technical teams, project leadership and senior clients
