Mott MacDonald is seeking an experienced Senior Traffic Engineer to join our growing Southern California transportation team. This role will support a diverse portfolio of transportation projects, including major assignments with LA Metro, California High-Speed Rail, Olympic Games-related infrastructure programs, and other high-profile transportation initiatives across the region.

The successful candidate will provide senior-level technical expertise in traffic engineering, worksite traffic control, detour planning, and transportation management while serving as a trusted advisor to clients and agency stakeholders. This role offers an opportunity to work on some of California's most visible transportation programs while helping to grow and strengthen our traffic engineering capability in Southern California.

This is an opportunity to play a key role in delivering major transportation investments across Southern California while working alongside a small but growing team of transportation professionals. You will have immediate involvement in high-profile projects, direct interaction with leading transportation agencies, and the opportunity to influence how critical infrastructure is planned, delivered, and managed throughout the region.

Responsibilities

• Lead the development, review, and approval of worksite traffic control plans, traffic management plans, and detour strategies for transportation infrastructure projects.
• Provide technical expertise for construction traffic management, temporary traffic control, work zone safety, and traffic operations.
• Support LA Metro assignments involving the review and approval of contractor traffic control plans for projects in construction and delivery.
• Support California High-Speed Rail and other transportation agencies with third-party design reviews, traffic engineering oversight, and transportation management activities.
• Contribute to transportation and mobility improvements associated with major regional programs, including Olympic Games-related projects.
• Prepare, review, sign, and seal engineering documents and traffic control plans as required.
• Coordinate with agencies including LA Metro, LADOT, Caltrans, local municipalities, and other transportation stakeholders.
• Support the preparation of traffic studies, traffic management plans, transportation analyses, and design deliverables.
• Utilize AutoCAD Civil 3D and related software tools to support project delivery where required.
• Manage project tasks, schedules, budgets, and technical deliverables.
• Build strong relationships with clients and agency personnel, serving as a trusted technical resource.
• Mentor junior engineers and technical staff while supporting the ongoing growth of the Southern California transportation team.
• Support proposal efforts, client presentations, and business development activities as opportunities arise.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across highways, transit, rail, and civil infrastructure projects

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
• California Traffic Engineer (TE) license required.
• Minimum 10 years of traffic engineering experience in a consulting, public agency, or transportation-focused environment.
• Strong experience in worksite traffic control, temporary traffic management, detour planning, and traffic operations during construction.
• Experience developing and reviewing traffic control plans for transportation infrastructure projects.
• Thorough knowledge of California traffic engineering standards, MUTCD requirements, Caltrans standards, and local agency review processes.
• Experience supporting transportation clients such as LA Metro, LADOT, Caltrans, California High-Speed Rail, local municipalities, or similar public agencies.
• Familiarity with agency review and approval processes for transportation and transit projects.
• Experience using AutoCAD Civil 3D is highly desirable.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills with the ability to work directly with clients, contractors, and public agencies.
• Experience supporting major transportation, transit, rail, or infrastructure projects is preferred.
• Ability to mentor technical staff and contribute to the growth of a collaborative, high-performing team.

Benefits & Rewards 

The expected salary for this position is $148,000 - $181,000

Individual pay is determined based on several factors such as work location, education, experience, and unique skills.
