We are seeking a skilled Geotechnical Engineer with a strong academic background and hands-on experience in underground and tunnel construction. This role involves evaluating geotechnical conditions, performing field investigations, developing design models, and preparing technical reports for a variety of subsurface infrastructure projects. The ideal candidate will bring a blend of field and office experience, technical expertise, and the ability to communicate complex geotechnical concepts effectively.

 

Responsibilities

  • Conduct geotechnical field investigations for underground construction projects, including oversight of third-party drilling subcontractors and in-situ testing (SPT, CPT, slug tests, packer tests).
  • Prepare detailed field records, soil and rock boring logs, and field notes.
  • Perform design services during construction, including review of shop drawings and submittals for excavation support systems.
  • Develop 2D and 3D numerical models for tunnels, shafts, caverns, and related facilities, assessing subsurface stratigraphy and geotechnical/hydrogeological parameters.
  • Evaluate tunnel-induced ground surface settlement.
  • Prepare geotechnical design calculations and technical reports such as Geotechnical Data Reports and Geotechnical Baseline Reports.
  • Assist in proposal development and client report submissions.
  • Support the team in resolving geology/geotechnical-related questions and challenges.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geology or Civil Engineering.
  • Master’s degree in Geological Engineering or Underground and Tunnel Construction.
  • Minimum of 4 years of relevant work experience, ideally a mix of field and office-based roles.
  • Coursework supporting responsibilities includes:
    • Bachelor’s level: Geologic Site Investigations, Structural Geology, Mineralogy and Petrography, Engineering Hydrology, Rock Mechanics, Soil Mechanics.
    • Master’s level: Advanced Rock and Soil Mechanics, Field and Laboratory Testing, Geologic Engineering Site Investigation, Soil and Rock Behavior, Applied Numerical Modeling for Geomechanics, Advanced Geotechnical Engineering.
  • Proficiency in geotechnical software and modeling tools.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.

The expected salary for this position is $107,000 - $131,000. 

Individual pay is determined based on several factors such as work location, education, experience, and unique skills.
