Are you ready to help redefine mobility in dynamic urban environments? Mott MacDonald is hiring a Senior Transportation Planner in our San Francisco, CA office. We’re looking for a dedicated professional with 10+ years of experience, ready to lead transformative projects that set the standard for sustainable and inclusive transportation systems. In this role, you’ll serve as a key leader, driving major planning initiatives for infrastructure, multimodal networks, and event mobility strategies.

As a Senior Transportation Planner, you will oversee impactful projects from start to finish, ensuring timely delivery and budget adherence. You’ll be the primary client contact, working closely to understand their goals and provide customized solutions that exceed expectations. Your leadership will unite multidisciplinary teams, foster collaboration, and uphold the highest quality standards, contributing directly to innovative transportation outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead multimodal planning initiatives, including transit, active transportation, complete streets, station access, and corridor studies.
  • Manage the development of transportation projects with a focus on rail-based public transport and multi-modal systems.
  • Apply advanced transportation analysis, including pedestrian and traffic modeling, for clients in the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, Portland, Seattle and Vancouver, Canada.
  • Utilize industry-leading software (Synchro, HCS, ArcGIS, VISSIM) for traffic studies and capacity analysis
  • Prepare traffic operations and transit corridor analyses, traffic impact studies, and comprehensive transportation plans.
  • Conduct traffic management planning, including forecasting and analyzing diversion strategies, and summarizing project benefits and costs.

As a Senior Transportation Planner based in our San Francisco, CA office, you’ll play a pivotal role in overseeing high-impact projects from inception to completion, ensuring each phase is completed on schedule and within budget. You will serve as a primary point of contact for clients, facilitating ongoing communication to understand their needs and deliver tailored solutions that exceed expectations. Your expertise will guide multidisciplinary teams, foster collaboration, and maintain quality standards, all while building strong client relationships that drive the success of transformative transportation initiatives.


Responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Oversee multimodal planning initiatives, including transit, active transportation, complete streets, station access, and corridor studies.
  • Develop multi-modal transportation planning projects with a focus on rail-based public transport.
  • Apply expertise in transportation-related multimodal analyses to support projects for clients in the San Francisco Bay Area.
  • Utilize and apply industry-relevant software and tools, such as Synchro, HCS, ArcGIS, and/or VISSIM, to conduct traffic and operational studies and capacity analyses.
  • Prepare rail and transit corridor analyses, traffic impact studies, and transportation plan developments.
  • Conduct traffic analysis for management plans, including forecasting and evaluating diversions, as well as summarizing associated benefits and costs.
  • Manage projects from scope definition through delivery, including schedules, budgets, deliverables, as the primary client contact.
  • Incorporate principles of equity, safety, and sustainability into planning efforts, assess impacts on disadvantaged communities, and propose data-driven solutions.
  • Communicate analysis results effectively through presentations and clear, organized written documentation.
  • Interpret travel demand modeling and demand forecasting outcomes to assist in projecting future traffic volumes.
  • Compose technical reports and documents for clients and internal use; prepare presentations for diverse client and public audiences.
  • Provide quality assurance for traffic analyses, which includes review of traffic data, forecasts, simulations, and operational assessments.
  • Collaborate successfully within team environments, work with regional traffic engineering teams, and participate in mentoring activities.
  • Engage with clients during project meetings and foster strong working relationships.
  • Adhere to project timelines and budgets and promptly report any concerns to project management.
  • Represent Mott MacDonald at conferences and within professional organizations.
  • Mentor junior staff, promote a collaborative team environment, and contribute to proposal preparation and business development efforts.

We are seeking a senior transportation planner to join our San Francisco, CA office under a hybrid working policy.

Applicants should meet the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in transportation planning, transportation engineering, urban planning, or a related field.
  • At least 10 years of relevant experience in transportation planning and professional practice.
  • Experience managing projects, coordinating multidisciplinary teams, and delivering high-quality work.
  • Background in conducting traffic engineering/transportation planning studies and analysis.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including experience presenting to public agencies and community groups.
  • Proficiency with GIS and transportation analysis tools (e.g., Synchro, VISSIM, pedestrian modeling, travel demand forecasting).
  • Ability to research and communicate information clearly and concisely.
  • Professional communication skills across all staff levels.
  • Independent, analytical thinker committed to high-quality work and follow-through.
  • Familiarity with California planning frameworks, CEQA/SB 743, multimodal level-of-service, Complete Streets, and equity/environmental justice considerations.

The expected salary for this position is $165,000- $200,000

Individual pay is determined based on several factors such as work location, education, experience, and unique skills.
