Mott MacDonald is looking for an individual to develop, support and lead the execution of the systems assurance activities on projects executed by Mott MacDonald in North America with direct responsibility for those projects occurring in Canada. They will be responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with key suppliers, regulators, safety bodies, industry groups and Standards bodies in North America and Europe.
This role will be based in Toronto or Vancouver and reports to the Rail Systems Lead within Mott MacDonald Canada.
Responsibilities will include:
- Lead the development, adoption and delivery of key System Assurance processes and practices within MM’s North American business; to include Safety Management, Safety Case Development, Safety Certification, Hazard Management, Reliability, Availability and Maintainability (RAM), Verification and Validation (V&V).
- Lead the System Assurance elements of project proposals within Mott MacDonald Canada, including RAM and Safety Management together with budget development as necessary.
- Lead the Systems Assurance (SA) elements of project delivery within Mott MacDonald Canada.
- Provide technical advisory and assist with the development or improvement of Safety Assurance processes and practices within our client and partner organizations.
- Provide direct SA support and insight to each project’s management and delivery team
- Select, develop and work with key delivery partners and service providers for project execution.
- Support the growth and development of MM’s Canada and US Rail Systems Practice and junior staff
- Provide technical direction and mentorship to the System Assurance team in MM Canada.
- Undertake cost review and analysis of System Assurance costs against delivery on active projects. Where necessary, discuss and agree corrective actions with relevant team members.
- Engage with end clients as and when necessary
- Deliver strategic direction for System Assurance processes and practices within MM Canada and US Business Units.
- Development of Rail Systems Practice business with Canada, in conjunction with the Practice Lead, to include Safety Management, Safety Case Development, Safety Certification, Hazard Management, Reliability, Availability and Maintainability (RAM), Verification and Validation (V&V).
The ideal candidate will have the following experience:
- Degree (or equivalent) in Engineering/Science (preferably Systems/Railway Engineering/Aerospace/Automation).
- P.Eng in BC or Ontario, or eligible for membership with EGBC or PEO as a P.Eng
- 15-20 years of Engineering including progressive experience in System Assurance with preferred experience in rail and transit projects
- Demonstrable strength in a minimum of three of the following areas (and working knowledge of the remainder):
- Safety Integrity identification and management (EN 50126/IEC 61508)
- Safety Certification (EN 51026 and /or MIL 882E)
- Safety Case development
- Safety Risk Assessment (CMREA / CSM-RA)
- Hazard identification and management
- RAM (EN 50126)
- Strong communication skills and English fluency.
- Good interpersonal skills with proven ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplined team.
- Experience in client-facing roles with proven ability to hold competent business discussions with Clients
- Able to hold competent technical discussions with Client representatives
- Able to interface with domain specialists, design managers and construction project managers, in a competent professional manner.
- Broad experience of delivery within major infrastructure projects.
- Knowledge of railway systems and / or operation within infrastructure projects / technology development and implementation projects.
Travel Requirements:
- Travel is part of the role and it is expected that the successful applicant will be able to travel within Canada and the US to MM locations, project offices, clients and construction sites.

In compliance with the B.C. Pay Transparency Act, the expected salary range is from $150,000 - $180,000 CAD.
Multiple factors such as qualifications, overall experience and position responsibilities will be used to determine the successful candidate's actual salary within the expected range.
