Mott MacDonald is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Traction Power Engineering Specialist to lead the design, integration, and delivery of traction power systems for rail and transit projects across Canada. This role is within our Rail Systems team and will contribute to the growth of our Canadian operations through technical leadership, mentoring, and business development.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the Traction Power Systems engineering aspects of rail and transit project delivery, including coordination with civil, track, and systems design teams
  • Review and validate designs, specifications, installation plans, and testing procedures for traction power substations, power distribution, and electrification systems
  • Provide expert technical input to clients during the development of system requirements and contract documentation.
  • Oversee conceptual design and budget development for traction power systems in project bids
  • Support project teams throughout the full lifecycle—from feasibility to commissioning
  • Apply lessons learned and recommend corrective actions to improve project outcomes
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key suppliers and delivery partners for traction power equipment and solutions
  • Interface with utility providers for power supply coordination and integration.
  • Engage with clients and stakeholders to ensure alignment with project goals and technical standards

 

Candidate Specification:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or related discipline.
  • 10+ years of experience in the design, specification, installation, or maintenance of traction power systems, with a strong background in passenger rail and transit projects.
  • Professional Engineer designation in Alberta, British Columbia or Ontario required (or eligible to obtain within 6–8 months)
  • Proven experience in:
    • Traction Power Substation design and integration
    • Specification of equipment such as transformers, rectifiers, and switchgear
    • Power distribution systems including feeder cables and circuit breakers
    • SCADA systems for control and monitoring
    • Interfacing with power utilities and regulatory bodies
  • Familiarity with Canadian and international standards for railway electrification and power systems.
  • Experience with delivery systems such as:
    • Overhead Catenary Systems (OCS)
    • Power rail systems
    • Shop power / “Stinger” systems
  • INCOSE ASEP or CSEP certification is desirable.
  • Strong communication skills and fluency in English.
  • Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams and lead technical discussions with clients and partners.
  • Knowledge of Systems Engineering principles and lifecycle management (IEC/IEEE 15288).

In compliance with the B.C. Pay Transparency Act, the expected salary range is from $118,000 - $150,000
Multiple factors such as qualifications, overall experience and position responsibilities will be used to determine the successful candidate's actual salary within the expected range.
